Local 3090 Fights to Save Jobs and Services in Mayor’s War on Women

AFSCME Local 3090 (LA City clerical and support staff) and other union members with the Coalition of LA City Unions have worked assiduously with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to help the residents of Los Angeles during these tough economic times. Last year the Coalition re-opened their contract in good faith and made sacrifices totaling nearly $850 million. But now the Mayor has turned his back on their good will. He is proposing 264 layoffs, as well as pay and benefit reductions and the privatization of some city services. The Coalition has presented alternatives to save the city, but the mayor just isn’t paying attention. As part of their fight to save jobs and stop the service cuts, the Coalition recently organized a number of actions, including a well-attended press conference (pictured, with Local 3090 out front), rallies, and speaking out at City budget and finance meetings. A huge number – 88 percent – of the proposed layoffs would come from the clerical unit, particularly from within the Los Angeles Police Department. These are predominantly “Pink Collar” women workers – begging the question of just what sort of Democrat, or friend of labor, the Mayor really is.
