Keep Our Los Angeles Public Libraries Safe

Social share icons

Library workers deserve to be safe at work. Libraries should be a safe space for all residents to enjoy. However, the rise in violent incidents prevents residents from visiting the library and prevents employees from feeling safe. Library workers have had to deal with violence while at work for far too many years. Recent LAPD statistics highlight a troubling escalation in safety issues, with reported incidents at libraries rising nearly 10% from 2023 to 2024. Total incidents grew from 1,886 in 2023 to 2,055 in 2024, following 2,064 recorded in 2022.

The absence of an effective safety strategy from library administration has become undeniable. Because the administration continues to fail in its duty to protect personnel, it is now necessary for the staff members most impacted by these conditions to lead their own advocacy.

Please add your name to our petition below to show your support for safer libraries for residents and employees. In the comment box please share details of any incident that occurred at the library where you work.

From: Petition Signers

We, the undersigned, request the administration of the Los Angeles Public Library increase the safety and security of our patrons and employees. We request our current security officers be given better training about the culture and protocols already in place at our facilities. Last, we request the resuscitation of the Safety & Security Committee into a viable, working committee that can respond with safety solutions to security challenges.

Beyond these measures, we urge the Mayor, City Council, and Library Commissioners to reject the status quo regarding the quality of contract security agencies. Patrons and staff deserve high-quality security that is not limited by the current pool of agencies, and we call for a new plan or task force to address these systemic failures.
