Aquarium of the Pacific workers win their union election

Employees at the Aquarium of the Pacific (AOP) have voted to form Aquarium of the Pacific Workers United (AOPWU) with AFSCME District Council 36.
Despite weeks of captive audience meetings and experiencing other union busting tactics, the majority of the votes cast were in favor of the union.
“I am extremely proud of the time and hard work that the AOPWU organizing put in to win their union,” said Yvette Elam, organizing director at AFSCME District Council 36. “They dealt with a massive misinformation and union busting campaign, but they remained strong throughout it all and came up with a win.”
The election, which was administered by the National Labor Relations Board, was held on Monday at the Aquarium of the Pacific.
“This experience has taught me a lot about what it takes to fight for workers’ representation. The world is full of uncertainties, but AOP management doesn’t have to steer through the unknown alone,” said Noel King, a member of the AOPWU organizing committee. “We deserve a seat at the table to negotiate changes for a better workplace… I’m truly thankful to work with amazing people who are passionate about AOP’s mission and its future.”
As they prepare to negotiate their first contract, the employees are focused on establishing avenues for professional development, limiting the use of generative AI at AOP, and ensuring that employees receive livable wages.
“With our vote today, the workers of AOP Workers United finally have a seat at the table,” said Angie Pulmano, a member of the AOPWU organizing committee. “I am beyond proud of my team. I’m looking forward to a future filled with empathy for one another and respect for the workers that make this place run.”
