Big win for workers at JVS SoCal Gain after picket

Employees at JVS SoCal GAIN have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a two-year contract.
The bargaining team negotiated for months with little to no movement on management’s wage increase proposals. However, following an informational picket that sent a strong message that the members of AFSCME Local 800 (Council 36) are united and deserve to be treated with respect, JVS SoCal GAIN management quickly returned to the bargaining table and changed their wage increase offer.
The contract, which will expire in December 2026, includes 5% to 15% wage increases, plus longevity wage increases. The contract also includes an ongoing professional training program, a catastrophic leave bank, additional bereavement days, faster vacation accrual, and a respect clause that states the employer and all bargaining unit employees shall treat one another with respect.
“I think the real win was the unity of the GAIN workers,” said Lilia Arbona, president of AFSCME Local 800. “We had a great negotiations team and member action team who got members engaged in negotiations and to participate in a game changing informational picket. These dedicated case workers, job developers and clerical staff stood together to make their voices heard and make a difference in their wages and benefits.”
