AFSCME District Council 36 calls for the immediate release of David Huerta

LOS ANGELES – AFSCME District Council 36 Executive Director Matthew Maldonado released the following statement after David Huerta was detained by ICE.

“Today, SEIU California and SEIU-United Service Workers President, David Huerta, was unjustly detained and injured during an ICE raid in Los Angeles. He has been released from the hospital but remains in DHS custody.

“He was detained while doing what labor and civil rights leaders have done a million times – exercise his right to free speech and protect those in our community who are the most vulnerable.

“We are truly disturbed that Huerta and other hardworking Angelenos were subjected to these acts of cruelty and violence. We condemn these ICE raids and call for the immediate release of David Huerta and others who were wrongfully detained.

“The Los Angeles community values and respects our immigrant community members who are just trying to provide for their families and live a dignified life in our beautiful city.

“We will continue to stand in solidarity with the immigrant community as they are facing indiscriminate raids and living in fear.

“We call on lawmakers to take a stand against these raids and protect all Angelenos!”
